Tamil Nadu RTO Motor Vehicle Registration Online
The Tamil Nadu RTO Website is a valuable resource for obtaining comprehensive information regarding the registration of motor vehicles. Prior to commencing the registration process, it is highly beneficial to familiarize oneself with the requirements for obtaining a Learner’s License.
The Transport Commissionerate and State Transport Authority, under the jurisdiction of the Government of Tamil Nadu, oversee the services related to the registration of motor vehicles. According to the provisions of the motor vehicle act, it is mandatory for all vehicles to be registered with the RTO/MVI before they can legally operate on public roads. To simplify the registration process, car dealers have been granted access to the Vahan portal, wherein they can utilize their login credentials to apply for registration on behalf of the vehicle owners.
Through their online login, dealers can complete the necessary Form 20 and upload all required documents. Furthermore, they can conveniently make online payments for fees and taxes. Once the online application, along with the required documents and payments, has been submitted, the vehicle must be presented before the Registering Authority or Motor Vehicle Inspector for inspection. If the vehicle meets all the requirements stipulated by the Motor Vehicles Act and its associated rules, a registration mark will be assigned.
The Life Time Tax for a vehicle is determined based on its purchase invoice. For two-wheelers, it amounts to 8% of the total cost of the vehicle. In the case of four-wheelers, if the vehicle’s cost is up to 10 lakhs, the tax is 10% of the total cost; for vehicles costing more than 10 lakhs, the tax increases to 15% of the total cost. Transport passenger vehicles are taxed based on factors such as the number of seats or floor area, while goods vehicles are taxed according to their gross vehicle weight (GVW).
Registration Certificates for non-transport vehicles (such as personal cars and motorcycles) are valid for 15 years. After this period, they must be renewed every five years, subject to the payment of Green tax. Transport vehicles (both goods and passenger vehicles) must undergo renewal (Fitness certificate-FC) every two years for the initial eight years of their existence. Subsequently, these vehicles must be renewed annually, again subject to the payment of green tax.
